If you’re a man who’s had trouble keeping an erection for sex, you may have come to the wrong place.
Now the Food and Drug Administration is warning men they’ll be “more likely to become impotent if they’re taking nitrates (the most-used form of birth control) than if they’re taking Viagra, the drug’s generic.”
The drug, which is used to treat angina and chest pain, is meant for “relieve” needs. But doctors are advising men who take nitrates to avoid taking Viagra if they’ve had a heart attack in the past.
The new warning is based on findings of a research study which was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, which analyzed data from a study published in November, 2008.
The researchers found that men taking nitrates, such as the generic Viagra, had a 2 to 4 times greater risk of developing a heart attack and a heart failure in the first five years of life. The risk was higher for those taking more than 200,000 milligrams of nitrates daily.
The researchers added that nitrates should only be taken when a man is unable to maintain an erection for sexual intercourse because of the risk of heart attack or heart failure. They also said that men who have an erection for more than two hours a day are at a greater risk of having a stroke, heart attack or a heart attack.
According to the FDA, men taking nitrates should be advised not to take nitroglycerin or any other nitrate drug. The FDA also warned men that “if you use nitrates and take other medicines to lower blood pressure and if you’re taking blood pressure medicines, you could have dangerously low blood pressure, leading to serious health problems, including stroke and heart attacks.”
The researchers also said that the FDA recommends men be advised to avoid using nitrates “when prescribed for sexual problems” because of the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. The agency said it has not evaluated the safety of nitrates.
A spokesperson for Pfizer said the company is reviewing the research and that the FDA does not recommend that men use nitrates for sexual problems.
The FDA has not issued a public advisory about the new warning, but it has been reported that men taking nitrates may be able to use Viagra without the risk of experiencing a heart attack or a heart failure, according to a.Viagra is the brand name of the medicine sildenafil, the generic of the drug Viagra.
“The FDA has not evaluated the safety and efficacy of Viagra,” said Dr. David Brennan, chair of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The agency is reviewing more information about this drug and is reviewing whether there’s enough information to make this drug safe and effective for patients.”

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 18 (HealthDay News) -- U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized a shipment of Viagra pills, which was discovered in a shipment intercepted from a Mexican-American business. The pills were sent from an address in Mexico.
CBP has seized nearly 100,000 Viagra pills, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition that affects men in the United States.
Viagra, the brand name for the medicine sildenafil, is a prescription medicine that is commonly used to treat ED. The pills are sold over the counter at pharmacies in Mexico. They have the same active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, which is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition in which the heart is not able to pump enough blood through the lungs.
The drugs were seized from a shipment arriving from a U. S.-based online pharmacy. The shipment was addressed to a warehouse in the United States, where it was filled by a U.
